What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that the team at First Dental Associates surgically places in your jawbone. Once placed, implants connect to crowns and bridges or dentures, providing a stable foundation for replacement teeth. Dental implants offer a long-lasting solution for missing teeth that require less maintenance than less permanent options.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants offer many advantages for replacing missing teeth. After bonding to your jawbone, dental implants can:

Improve tooth function

Since implants bond to your jawbone, they allow you to chew comfortably and speak clearly, mimicking your natural tooth function.

Preserve the jawbone

The roots of your teeth help stimulate your jawbone. Without healthy roots, the bone begins to break down and reabsorb into the body. Dental implants osseointegrate (bond) to your jawbone to preserve tissue and prevent bone deterioration.

Last for decades

Unlike dentures, bridges, and other temporary replacement teeth, dental implants can last for 25 years or longer*.

Boost oral hygiene

Dental implants require no special care. You can brush and floss normally to preserve your oral hygiene.

Will I need a bone graft before getting dental implants?

Dental implants require plenty of healthy tissue in your jawbone to osseointegrate properly. The team takes multiple scans before surgery, including digital X-rays, to ensure you’re a candidate for implants.
The team may recommend a bone graft if you don’t have enough bone in your jaw to support implants. This process involves taking bone from your jaw or hip, or donated tissue, and placing it into the area containing low-density jawbone. The healing process can take 4-6 months.

What can I expect from dental implant surgery?

When you arrive for dental implant surgery, the team administers anesthesia before making an incision in the gums to access the jawbone. Next, they drill a small hole into the jawbone and surgically place the implant. Healing after surgery usually takes about 6-12 weeks.
Once your mouth fully heals, the team takes digital impressions to create your custom-made replacement teeth. They connect these prosthetics to your implants at your final appointment.
